Defender Servicing

Pre-TD5 engines (200TDI, 300TDI, V8 petrol) receive 6,000-mile oil changes, while TD5 engines get the same interval plus the unique centrifuge rotor replacement. The final Puma TDCi engines can extend to 10,000 to 12,000 miles but require DPF-compatible oil and more comprehensive drivetrain attention.

The new Defenders (L663) standard interval is 21,000 miles or 24 months for four and six-cylinder engines, and 16,000 miles or 12 months for V8 models. For 2.0 Ingenium diesel engines (D200, D240, D250), we strongly recommend oil changes at 10,000-mile intervals due to well-documented timing chain issues.

Discovery Servicing

The Discovery 1 uses a 6,000-mile or 12-month service interval, whichever comes first, for oil and filter changes across all engine variants. For Discovery 1s used in demanding conditions such as towing or regular off-roading, we recommend treating the service interval as 3,000 miles or six months.

The Discovery 2 uses a 12,000-mile or 12-month service interval with an alternating Service A and Service B schedule. Service A at 12 months includes engine oil, centrifuge rotor (TD5), fuel filter, brake inspection, and propshaft greasing. Service B at 24 months adds gearbox oil changes, transfer box oil renewal, automatic transmission servicing, and brake fluid replacement.

The Discovery 3 uses an alternating Service A and Service B schedule at 12-month or 15,000-mile intervals, whichever comes first.

The Discovery 4 uses different service intervals depending on the engine. The 3.0 TDV6/SDV6 diesel from 2012 onwards has an extended 12-month or 16,000-mile interval, while earlier models and the V8 use 12 months or 15,000 miles. All diesels alternate between Service A and Service B schedules, with Service B adding brake fluid renewal, gearbox servicing, and additional checks.

Discpvery 5. Land Rover specifies a 16,000-mile or 12-month service interval for all Discovery 5 models using an alternating A and B service schedule. However, we strongly recommend shortened oil change intervals, particularly for the 2.0 Ingenium diesel engine. This is not about generating additional revenue but preventing catastrophic failures that cost thousands to repair.
We recommend 6,000 to 8,000-mile oil changes for 2.0 Ingenium diesels, 8,000 to 10,000 miles for 3.0 Ingenium mild-hybrid diesels, and 10,000 to 12,000 miles for petrol engines.

Freelander Servicing

Freelander 1. Land Rover specifies 12,000-mile or 12-month service intervals for the Freelander 1, though we recommend 10,000-mile intervals for optimal reliability. TD4 diesel models used for towing, frequent short trips, or severe conditions benefit from oil changes at 8,000 miles.

Freelander 2 servicing follows Land Rover’s 15,000-mile or 12-month interval for A-Service and 30,000-mile or 24-month interval for B-Service. However, we recommend performing B-Service level work at every 15,000-mile service for optimal reliability.
We understand the specific maintenance needs of this compact premium SUV, from timing belt replacement on TD4 diesel engines to critical Haldex servicing and rear differential monitoring.

Timing Chains (2.0 Ingenium)

Timing chain failure is a common issue on vehicles fitted with the 2.0 Ingenium diesel engine.

The main causes are oil dilution, often linked to incomplete DPF regenerations, combined with the design and construction of the timing chains and guides themselves. Early signs of a failing timing chain typically include a rattling noise on cold start, engine management faults, or a Restricted Performance warning message on the dashboard.

If the problem is ignored, the timing chain can stretch excessively, jump timing, or in severe cases fail completely. This can result in the pistons making contact with the valves, causing extensive engine damage. The plastic timing chain guides can also deteriorate over time, releasing debris into the engine oil system. These particles can restrict the oil pickup, potentially leading to crankshaft bearing failure, turbocharger damage, and ultimately complete engine failure.

The recommended repair is to replace the timing chains along with all associated guides, tensioners, and idler components, restoring the timing system to full reliability and helping to prevent costly engine damage in the future.
